Highlights of the 2011 Annual Awards Ceremony
The Department of Politics and Government held its annual awards ceremony at the Bone Student Center, on April 25, 2011. About 80 students, family members and faculty attended the ceremony. Twenty-three students received awards in 18 categories, including outstanding seniors, internships, minority student, legal studies students, graduate students, and various subfields within the political science. Alice Ebel Outstanding Senior Award, named after the founding Department Chair, is given to Alexandra Hundley. Four other students also received the Alice Ebel Award. Grant Anderson received the Hibbert R. Roberts Outstanding Senior Award. The Award is named after the former Chair of the Department. Daniel Thetford received the outstanding graduate student award. Laura Gasperik received the graduate student service award. New members of the Pi Sigma Alpha, the national Political Science honor society, were inducted at the ceremony. Thirty-nine students who provide leadership in registered student organizations were also recognized. The 2011 Award Ceremony also recognized faculty teaching excellence. Dr. Noha Shawki received the Hibbert R. Roberts Teaching Excellence Award. The Pi Sigma Alpha award for teaching excellence went to Mr. Erik Rankin.
In addition to political science students, their families, and faculty members, the ceremony was also attended by Mrs. Sandy Roberts, Emeritus Professors George Gordon, and Tom and Kay Wilson, Interim Dean Jim Payne, Associate Dean Sally E. Parry and Assistant Dean Deborah Fox.
Department Chair Ali Riaz, in his welcome remarks, thanked the donors, particularly Emeritus Professors, for their generous contributions in establishing a number of the awards. Dean Payne congratulated the award recipients for their outstanding achievements.
