Politics and Government majors earn academic credit for approved internships. To qualify for credit, an internship must be

  • off campus preferred; on campus internships will be handled on a case by case basis
  • related in some meaningful way to politics, government, public service, or other facets of civic life
  • and students MUST be registered PRIOR to starting the internship--within the first week of the semester at the latest. Credit will NOT be given for past internships (students must take the internship course concurrently with the internship).

All paralegal or law-related interns apply to Professor Thomas McClure, and all campaign, nonprofit, political or administrative-related interns apply to Brittney Vietti.

A minimum cumulative gradepoint average of 2.0 is required. Waivers may be given in exceptional circumstances.

Academic Credit

Internships are offered to eligible students for academic credit. Each credit hour requires 45 hours of internship. Students must also fulfill additional course requirements as detailed in the syllabus. (The course syllabus will be made available to students with approved internships.) Students will be given a letter grade (A-F) upon completion of the course.

Duties vary according to internship. You will confirm your internship duties with your supervisor.

Most internships do not offer monetary compensation. Occasionally an internship offers a stipend or hourly wage. You will need to take this into consideration when applying for internships.
